Here comes 2.04 version of The UnReal World. As you can see the game
is developing and becoming less buggy and now it's your time to
contact me if you have any ideas or suggestions about the game.
If you feel that the game lacks some feature that is _MUST_ then
tell me about it and you'll hopefully see it in next version.
What I need now is huge amount of comments, ideas and bug-reports.

1.2 - REQUIREMENTS
=====================================================================
UrW is designed to run under MS-DOS (yuck) operating system.
It is suggested that your MS-DOS version is 5.0 or higher.
If your system is not able to run UrW contact the author.
FILES and BUFFERS settings in CONFIG.SYS should both be at least 20.
(see your MS-DOS manual for more info)
Color monitor is suggested and you will need EGA or VGA display
to see graphics.
NOTICE THAT EMM386.EXE MUST _NOT_ BE LOADED!

1.3 - WHAT IS URW?
=====================================================================
UrW is highly realistic computer fantasy role-playing game. This
means you will create an imaginary character who's life you will
share - your character wanders around the world controlled by you.
1.4 - MEANING OF LIFE
=====================================================================
Your objective in UrW is simply to live. Explore the environment
and try to earn your daily meal somehow. Develope your skills,
try to make your life meaningful and see as the world rolls
on. UrW is designed to be very close to real role-playing
considering the fact that this is still a computer game.
You may freely seek for excitement but remember that the world
out there may not be so nice and easy for a rookie.
1.5 - PLAYING URW
=====================================================================
First of all you must create a character. This is done by
executing CRTPLR.EXE or choosing 'Create a new character' after
executing PLAY.EXE. It is recommended that rookies will use
PLAY.EXE to play UrW.
UrW is started by executing URW.EXE and giving first eight
characters of your characters name as a commandline parameter.
(If you use PLAY.EXE you don't have to care about this)
In the game you should tap <?> to see list of commands.
2 - CHARACTERS

2.1 - GENERAL ABOUT CHARACTERS
=====================================================================
Characters that you create vary in attributes, skills, race
and occupation. Here you can see short descriptions of different
races:
2.2 - Human
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Humans are just like you and me or anybody else out there.
2.3 - Half-Orc
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Half-Orcs are not necessarily always so dirty and evil as pure orcs.
Half-Orc is born after an orc has 'chosen' a temporary female from
human-race... Half-Orcs look like ugly people who have sharp teeth,
little bit like nuzzle-shaped head and glittering red eyes. Half-Orcs
are seen occasionaly at settled areas. Usually they are left in peace
because human mind usually controls Half-Orc little bit more than
Orc-mind.
Half-Orcs are not usually more good than evil - they just want to
live their lives without punishment for their difference.
Sometimes they might become unruly and act like an Orc and in the next
moment they might act like scary stranger searching for the refuge.

2.4 - Elf
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Elves are eldest human related race in the world of UrW.
Elves are incredibly beautiful and valiant race which is unfortunately
fading from the world of UrW. Elves were first ones who walked on
this earth and that's why most of geographical toponyms are
Elven-language.
Reading J.R.R. Tolkien's literature will give you right picture about
Elves.
Elves have usually blond, gold-glossing hair and they are slim, agile
and beautiful to look at. Their complexion is usually more pale than
white people. Elven senses are developed further than regular man
because of earthy living. They can see,hear and smell many times
sharper than human. Anyone who belongs to other race can't know
everything about Elves. They have ability to make their utensils so
wonderful that other races think it is a magic - but it is only natural
to Elves.
Elven language is beautiful to listen. When many Elves are speaking
one might almost think it is singing. Elves are interested in arts,
especially in music. Elves are earthy beings and there is tales that
Elves can talk to animals. They live usually in old forests and their
acts and existence will make their dwelling place beautiful area where
the trees seem to be young for ever and where grass is glittering and
flowers smell so amazing way that it feels like a dream. Usually Elves
don't even let other races to enter their forests.
2.5 - Halfling
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Halflings are short, robust, human-like beings. They are also known
with names such as Hobbits (Halflings usually call themselves Hobbits)
and Periannath (Elven language). They are about 60 - 120 cm tall (or
should we say short) and inclined to fatness. Most usual size of regular
Hobbit is height of 100 centimeters. Most of them have curly, brown hair
and blue eyes. Halflings are cheerful and peaceful beings who avoid
conflicts.
Reading J.R.R. Tolkien's literature will give you right picture about
Halflings.
Halflings love farm-food,beer,parties,jokes and their own home inside
a green hill. Their dwellings are really usually digged under the ground
and they look like big, furnished caves. Their dwellings are
called 'Smials' - as they say it in Hobbit language. Halfling culture is
much more different than ours. At their birthdays they give presents to
their guests. Sometimes they may spend all the day just doing gardening
or eating and celebrating. Halflings live in their own communities and
they are usually afraid of big people (we all are scared of huge strangers
if you ask them). Most of them are afraid of boating too.
Mushrooms is one passion of every Halfling. Real Halfling can cook
mushrooms in so many ways that human might think it's a waste of time.
Art of cooking (and art of eating) runs in every Halflings veins.
Very small part of Halflings have ever gone away from their community.
Halfling adventurers are very unique ones and I have to tell you that
they are not very good at it even if they dare to wander away from
community.
No Halfling have never known any kind of magical abilities. Halflings
usually aren't interested in magic or are afraid of it.

2.6 - Dwarf
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Dwarves are about 100 - 140 cm tall, sturdy and fierce human kind of
race. Dwarf-females look very much like Dwarf-males and it's very hard
for outsider to recognize these two from each other. Dwarfmales have
usually long beard and they get bald quite young. Dwarves are strong
and they won't get tired very often - running is almost only thing that
takes Dwarfs strength away in quite short time. They are race that lives
deep inside the mountains digging tunnels and halls and mining jewels.
In the combat situations Dwarves use axes and hammers.
Elves and Dwarves don't like each others partly because of very
different kind of culture and partly because of reasons that have been
forgotten in hundreds of years. This discord appears mostly in blather -
only few times Dwarf and Elf have attacked with weapons against each
others.
Dwarves don't usually come out from their dark caves. They live in big
communities and create empires that stand for hundreds of years.
Reading J.R.R. Tolkien's literature will give you right picture of
Dwarves.
2.7 - Half-Troll
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Half-trolls have many things in common with half-orcs. Under troll's
mind there still remains a bit of humanity, but troll's mind is much
more dominative. Half-trolls are tall, but not as tall as pure Trolls
and they look like sturdy, dark or gray burlesque looking humans with
flattened nose and sharp, twisted and dirty teeth. Half-trolls have
inheritet a whole lot of trollish srenght, but they are not as strong
as pure Trolls.
Half-trolls are seen sometimes, and usually they are left in peace.
3 - OCCUPATIONS

3.1 - GENERAL ABOUT OCCUPATIONS
=====================================================================
Depending on what occupation you will choose to your character
some of your characters skills will improve. Here is list of
occupations and explanations of which skills choosing specific
occupation will improve:
(notice that some of listed skills may not be available in current
UrW version...)
3.2 - FISHERMAN
=====================================================================
Fisherman learns fishing, seamanship, weatherlore and piloting.
3.3 - HUNTER
=====================================================================
Hunter learns tracking, stealth, survival, foraging, hideworking
and fletching.
3.4 - Legionaire
=====================================================================
Legionaire learns some weapon skills, foraging, survival, heraldry
and physician.
3.5 - Locksmith
=====================================================================
Locksmith learns lockcraft, metalcraft and carpentry.

4 - SKILLS
=====================================================================
4.1 - SKILLS IN GENERAL
=====================================================================
Your character knows several skills (both physical & lore skills)
which can be used by Function-key 4 (key sequence: <F4>). List of
skills and your mastery level for each skill can be seen by S key
or typing LIST after pressing Function-key 4
(key sequence: <F4>LIST<ENTER>). When you are using skills you must
type part of the skill name which you wish to use and press enter.
You may have to do several maneuvers after using some skill, at least
to select direction where you wish to use current skill.
Skills and maneuvers to complete them are descriped below:
4.2 - DODGE
-------------------------------------------------------
Ability to dodge attacks. This is automatic skill which
is activated in combat everytime you choose DODGE option.
4.3 - DAGGER
-------------------------------------------------------
Ability to use daggers and short knives. This is
automatic skill and it's activated everytime you use a
dagger.
4.4 - SWORD, AXE, SPEAR, FLAIL, BOW, CROSSBOW
-------------------------------------------------------
Abilities to use different kind of weapons.(see DAGGER)
4.5 - UNARMED
-------------------------------------------------------
Unarmed fighting (kicking,punching etc.). This is automatic
skill and it's activated everytime you execute combat
maneuver without any weapons
4.6 - FORAGING
-------------------------------------------------------
Finding (vegetarian) food in the wilderness.
This skill works only in local area. To use this skill
press [ENTER] in the wilderness and you will be zoomed
to local area. Then find some noticeable colored trees or
bushes, go beside them and use this skill. If you success
you'll find some vegetarian food. Notice that it might be
good idea to try this skill in the woods etc.
4.7 - FISHING

Fishing with or without equipment. This skill should
be used when you are beside water. If you success
you'll get some fish. Some fishing equipment (net etc.)
will improve your fishing skills.
4.8 - PHYSICIAN
-------------------------------------------------------
Diagnose and treat medical ailnments. This skill should
be used to give some first aid. When you get some wounds
use this skill to treat and diagnose them.
4.9 - SWIMMING
-------------------------------------------------------
General swimming. After using this skill you'll be asked
where to swim.

4.11 - LOCKCRAFT
-------------------------------------------------------
Ability to analyze and pick locks. With this skill you
may pick locked doors. After using this skill you will
be asked where is the door you wish to pick.
4.12 - TRACKING
-------------------------------------------------------
The ability to detect and follow tracks. Use this skill
only in the wilderness. If you success, you will find
some tracks and you will be told to which direction
these tracks lead. Follow the tracks and use this skill
again until you find your pray. If you fail following
the tracks you must seek new tracks.
4.12 - SURVIVAL
-------------------------------------------------------
The knack of surviving in the wilderness. Survival is
purpose outdoor skill for activities not covered with
other skills like Foraging, Tracking etc.
Currently you can use Survival only to build fires.
Executing this skill shows you small list of sub-skills
where you can take your pick.

5 - COMBAT AND INJURIES
=====================================================================
5.1 - FIGHTING (MELEE)
=====================================================================
There are several ways to hurt your enemy. You may punch or kick
or use your weapons. Depending on weapon it can be used to blunt,
edge or point your enemy. Each of those three aspect cause different
kind of damage. Weapons are used by keys <1> and <2>. <1> for attack
by primary weapon and <2> for attack by secondary weapon. You can
punch by pressing <9> and kick by pressing <0>.
Kicking and punching causes always blunting damage but when using
weapons you have to choose which aspect of damage you wish to use.
Some weapon may have all three aspect and some weapon might have
only one aspect. You can (for example) use sword to edge or point
or even blunt, spears can be used for point and blunting etc.
Different aspects cause different damage depending on weapon.
As you might guess the pointing with spear causes far more damage
than blunting.
When you've choosen attack maneuver you will be asked for
direction where your enemy is. When attack is executed you will
be notifiec with results and then it's your enemies turn to
attack.
When you are attacked you may try to dodge or block it (In case
you have weapon wielded. Notice that if secondary weapon is wielded
it will be used for blocking otherwise primary weapon is used.)
or ignore the whole thing. If you are attacked from behind or can't
see your enemy you can't respond to attack.
5.2 - FIGHTING (THROWING WEAPONS)

You can use almost any weapon as a throwing weapon but specific
throwing weapons (spears etc.) are of course most suitable for
throwing. To throw something you have to wield it and then press
<t>-key to throw it. You will be asked (if you've have wielded two
weapons) which weapon (primary or secondary) you wish to throw.
You can't select aspect (blunt, edge or point) for the weapon when
throwing it. Aspect for throwing weapons is always point but when you
are throwing something like sword it may hit enemy by any possible
aspect (randomly selected).
5.3 - FIGHTING (BOWS AND ARROWS)

Bows are classified to general bows (including short bows, long
bows etc.) and crossbows so there is also two bow-skills. Crossbows
are generally most easiest to use for rookies. In order to use any
bow you need some arrows. Bows or arrows alone can't be used in
combat - you must always have them both. When you wish to shoot an
arrow you must have some bow wielded and then you have to wield that
arrow too. When you have a bow and an arrow wielded tap a <t>-key to
activate Throw command. After that you will be asked for target and
when you have succesfully selected it your bow will be launched.
In order to shoot again you must always wield a new arrow.
Your success level is modified by range to target. Look at the
table below:

Here's couple of examples to help you understand the system:
Example 1 : You are throwing a spear. Your SPEAR mastery level is 32%.
There is 50 meters range between you and your target.
So your success level will be modified by -60%. You are
most likely not going hit. Remember that there is always 5%
possibility to success anyway.
Example 2 : You are about to launch your Crossbow and your CROSSBOW
mastery level is 42%. There is only 4 meters range
between you and your target so your success level will be
modified by +15% -> your final success level will be
57% (if you have no other penalties like injury or
heavy load). So you've got very good chances to hit.
As you can see the modifiers are biased towards high velocity
missiles such an arrows etc. They not only have higher range, but
are also more accurate at short range. On the other hand, low-velocity
missiles are easier to block/dodge, reflected by a penalty for
these weapons even at the closest range.
5.4 - INJURIES

Your character may be injured in several ways thought the most
common way to get hurt is the combat situation. Injuries that
don't kill you may still cause some serious effects that may
lead to death.

5.5 - BLEEDING WOUNDS
=====================================================================
Whenever you get a bleeding injury or old injury starts to bleed
you must stop the bleeding as soon as possible. It doesn't take
a long time to bleed to death. Use B key to stop bleeding.
First or second attempt to stop bleeding may not work but maybe
the third or fourth will - so do not stop trying! Bleeding wounds
are the most serious wounds a man can get so they should be
taken care first!
When you lose blood the [Bloodloss:] meter in the status window
starts to grow. Even the all bleeding is stopped lost blood won't
regenerate just like that. It usually takes several days to get
lost blood back. When [Bloodloss:] indicator has reduced to zero
(indicated by hyphen (-)) you have correct amount of blood running
in your veins.
5.6 - FIRST AID

You can and you should too give yourself a first aid.
When the battle is over and you see you are still alive you
should use PHYSICIAN skill (Key sequence: [F4]PHYSICIAN[ENTER])
to treat and diagnose your wounds. Bleeding wounds can't be
treated until the bleeding is stopped. First aid should be given
as soon as possible. Wounds will heal without first aid too but
successfull treatment improves healing speed and sets wounds to
better condition. You may check your wounds and their condition
by special command Wounds (Key sequence: #w).
5.7 - HEALING

Every single morning your wounds are checked and maybe healed
naturally a bit. Depending on wound conditon it will heal in
day or two or week or even a month. Blood regeneration is also
checked daily. By using special command Wounds (Key sequence: #w)
you may see conditions of your wounds. The injury window will pop up
and [Injury:] meter will show amount of injuriousness for each
wound. Shorter the indicator better the wound condition. When
indicator has reduced to zero the wound is fully healed.
[State:] meter will tell how critical the wound is. The more
nasty the wound is the longer does it take to heal. Very bad
wounds may have some nasty effects even they are almost healed.
6 - SPECIAL BUILDINGS

6.1 - SHOPS
=====================================================================
There are several kind of shops in the game selling several kind of
articles. Weapons,armours,comestibles etc. Shops are usually willing
to buy goods from you if you have something to sell. This is one good
possibility to earn some coins. When you enter a shop you usually see
tables full of items and shopkeeper wandering around. If you wish to
buy something just try to pick it up. If shopkeeper notices you
dealing will occur. Of course if shopkeeper doesn't see you, you are
able to steal. Selling something is also very simple; just drop the
item you wish to sell and see if shopkeeper is interested in it.
